Alaska covers more than 1.7 million km², which is three times the size of France, but is home to only 731,000 people. Rich in oil, the territory is traversed by the Yukon River and 3,000 other rivers, reminders of the old gold rush. The mountains are crowned with glaciers, particularly around Denali National Park, home to North America’s highest peak at 6,194 meters. To the south, a “stove pipe” runs along the coast, marked by fjords stretching 860 kilometers along the Inside Passage. There, 70 glaciers plunge into the sea, nestled among mist-shrouded forested mountains that are home to a rich variety of wildlife: otters, seals, bears, and whales.
To the west, Alaska extends to the Katmai Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where rivers teem with salmon, providing grizzly bears with sumptuous feasts.
