Here, we don't just set sail on a cruise. We set out on an expedition.

For nearly 30 years, Grands Espaces has been designing trips to the far corners of the world with a strong conviction: to make exploration a catalyst for knowledge, awareness, and conservation.

Here, there are no onboard shows, no gala evenings, and no rigid schedule dictated by the ship’s rhythm.

We disembark on secluded shores, explore by Zodiac, observe, meet people, and learn. An exceptional sighting? We take our time. The weather, the ice, the wildlife, and the opportunities on the ground make every day unique, accompanied by expert and passionate naturalist guides.

That’s our vision of luxury: the intimacy of a small group, the freedom to explore, and the privilege of being in the right place at the right time to take the time to experience it.

Welcome aboard.

  • A story told by a polar explorer.

Grands Espaces was founded in 1998 based on the vision of Christian Kempf, an explorer and scientist who has been traveling through the polar regions for more than 50 years. This unique field experience lies at the heart of our expertise and our identity.

  • Shipments on a human scale

Small ships carrying 12 to 98 passengers, small-group cruises: this intimate scale offers greater freedom and access to off-the-beaten-path destinations. An exploration “on tiptoe,” as close to nature as possible.

  • Exploration as a unifying theme

Here, the journey adapts to the rhythm of nature: an observation session is extended, an itinerary changes, an opportunity to explore is seized. Our luxury: being in the right place at the right time, and taking the time to experience it.

“ After gaining a general understanding of the phenomenon of the Northern Lights—as magical as it is fascinating—we headed to the outdoor deck to admire, during an observation session, the vastness of the starry sky, which suddenly took on shades of pale green and pink.

A moment suspended in time that we wish would last forever—just like this journey. ”

Everything You Need to Know Before Setting Out on an Expedition

  • What is a typical day on an expedition cruise?

On an expedition, there isn’t really a typical day—nature sets the pace. On a polar cruise, we generally plan for at least two outings per day, including shore excursions and Zodiac explorations. Lectures enrich each day, covering observations, wildlife, or the history of the regions we’re traveling through.

Meals provide structure to life on board, but the schedule remains intentionally flexible: when we come across an exceptional sighting, we’d rather take the time to experience it fully than keep an eye on the clock.

  • What level of physical fitness is required to participate in our trips?

Our trips are open to anyone who does not have any major health issues and is independent enough to participate in the activities offered. Depending on the trip and the excursions, we offer several difficulty levels, with outings suited to both casual walkers and hikers. The goal is to allow everyone to fully enjoy the experience at their own pace.

  • What gear should you bring on a polar cruise?

No need for expedition gear! We recommend warm, ski-style clothing, following the “onion-layer” principle: several layers worn one on top of the other to easily adapt to changing temperatures and activities.

Before departure, you’ll receive a detailed travel packet with a complete list of clothing and gear to pack for your expedition.

  • Will we have the chance to sail through the ice?

This is one of the highlights of a polar expedition. When the itinerary and conditions permit, our ships navigate as close as possible to the ice, among pack ice and icebergs. Designed for polar navigation and commanded by experienced officers, they allow us to approach these spectacular landscapes safely, at the pace dictated by natural conditions.
